will guarantee that even if we become rate limited messages are still

161 Sean: 2.0.1! Three weeks later, as scheduled! It is so nice to have
162 regular, frequent, releases again! This is a bugfix release; We have
17305 | 163 fixed over 100 issues reported to us at http://developer.pidgin.im. |
17303 | 164 Thanks to everyone for their great work, and look for the next release |
17304 | 165 in another three weeks! |
166 | |
17305 | 167 Stu: Lots'o'fixes in this. I don't know how you users find so many |
168 things for us to fix. 24 hours in a day (sadly). 24 is divisible by the
169 sum of its digits and by their product. It is the smallest composite
170 number, the product of whose divisors is a cube.
17303 | 171 |
17304 | 172 Luke: I requested that we have a bug fix release, and so we have! |
173 Many, though unfortunately not all, of the reports that have been
174 submitted to us since 2.0.0 have been fixed now, and so you should
175 all have a much more stable experience with this release. I also
176 want to thank the many users who have resubmitted their reports
177 as we close out the old Source Forge bug tracker. If all goes well,
178 your report will get the attention it deserves as we continue to
179 work on Pidgin, Finch, and libpurple.
17303 | 180 |
17312 | 181 Nathan: A ton of fixes have gone into this release. The feedback |
182 we've gotten on 2.0.0 has been incredible. Hopefully we've resolved
183 most of the critical issues with 2.0.1. If we haven't, I'm sure
184 our wonderful users will let us hear about it. I seem to be
185 forgetting something...oh, right, I haven't promised any cool new
186 features in the next release! So, I promise at least one cool new
187 feature in the next release...you just might have to adjust your
188 definition of 'cool' to get it.

221 new member of the family (Finch, formerly gaim-console) has been born,
222 and libpurple has come into its own as a solid, full-featured library
223 powering the greatest IM clients around. Bugs were fixed and
224 features were added by the hundreds (thousands?) since the last
225 major release, all while improving performance and resisting feature
226 creep. As Luke said, a ton of thought and effort has gone into

255 2.0.0beta7 (4/29/2007): |
16699 | 256 Sean: Beta 7. The final beta. A few major changes from beta6. For |
257 starters, we have some new names. That's pretty cool. We have a new
258 logo, to go along with it. And a lot of great icons! As Nathan mentions
259 below, we're totally back in the open now, having a signed agreement
260 from AOL that puts us in the clear. We all really regret having to go
261 completely dark for so long. Anyway, unlike betas1-6, which were of
262 normal release quality, this one is actually beta quality. There are
263 a few significant known issues, and a lot of changes that need a lot
264 of real-world testing. So, if you'd like to help us out, give it a
265 whirl, and let us know if you run into any major issues.
266 | |
16005 | 267 Nathan: So, the secret is out now. We renamed to Pidgin. I'd just |
268 like to apologize to everyone we've had to keep in the dark for the
269 last however-many months. I know it looked like development slowed
270 to a crawl, but in reality we've been working pretty hard to get
271 2.0.0 out the door, without getting into any legal trouble. I
272 realize that if we were some big corporation, we'd be getting flamed
273 about this secrecy for months. Please try to remember that we're
274 just a bunch of geeks who were scared of legal stuff (well, at least
275 I was. Scared, that is). The bottom line is that we're out in the
276 open again, and fully plan to stay that way. We're also opening up
277 the mail archives from the secretive past few months. You can scan
16706 | 278 through them if you want, or I can summarize. "Are the lawyers done |
16005 | 279 yet? No. Now? No. How about now? No." All lawyer jokes aside, |
280 I'm grateful to our legal team for crossing all the 't's and dotting
281 all the lowercase 'j's to get us the deal we got. Anyways, thanks
282 for your patience, and on to 2.0.1!
283 | |
16703 | 284 Gary: Well my silence, and our silence has ended. Finally the name |
285 change is over and done with and we can go back to a normal dev
286 cycle. Now if I can just get myself back onto a normal dev cycle,
287 but that's another story all together.

12527 | 369 2.0.0beta1 (12/17/2005): |
12541 | 370 Sean: I think Nathan sums everything up really well below. There's still |
371 a bunch we want to add (and remove) before the official release, but we
372 really want to start getting feedback about what's good and what's not.
373 So, please, be vocal about this beta!
12519 | 374 |
12541 | 375 Nathan: 15 months since we branched oldstatus, and started working on |
376 the behemoth that is 2.0.0. In that time, we've added a couple new
377 protocols, we had a few crazy patch writers become developers, and
378 had a few more people step up to be crazy patch writers. Sean wrote
379 a book, and we arbitrarily decided to make a version 1.0.0, and a
380 new versioning scheme. We got new artwork, and added almost 200 lines
381 to the ChangeLog. We've watched 2 major GTK+ releases, and added all
382 kinds of features using them. OK, I've wasted enough bits here. This
383 beta rocks, but it is a beta. Treat it as such, and enjoy!

12541 | 392 Tim: Well here it is, the first beta. There's a lot of cool things in |
393 here, but not all of them are finished or debugged. But then that's
394 why it's called a beta. Conversations are now contact-aware, and
395 there's a new status selector. There's smooth scrolling on incoming
396 messages as well. Our Crazy Patch Writers have been doing a good
397 job too, it seems like we're never lacking some patches in the
398 tracker to review. | |
12514 | 399 |
12541 | 400 Etan: I know I'm not going to be able to think of all the things I should |
401 talk about here so I'll just go with the stuff I remember. Adding buddies
402 on ejabberd jabber servers should work more correctly now (it's possible
403 adding buddies on other servers is a bit broken currently I'm still
404 looking into it). There are still other jabber issues I'm looking into
405 with handling of buddies.
406 In other topics, I finally brought my Accounts menu into gaim, though the
407 current example of it isn't exactly what I had in mind, anyone with any
408 suggestions/comments/etc about it please speak up.
409 Other than the stuff I'm sure I'm forgetting to mention this beta should
410 be awesome as gaim 2.0.0 is going to be awesome. Have fun with it.
12514 | 411 |
12541 | 412 Luke: pretty much everything important has been said, so this is going to |
413 be rather repetative. This is a beta folks, so it will have bugs. It
414 will crash unexpectedly. Perhaps even frequently. Use it at your peril.
415 But do use it (though you might want to back up ~/.gaim first), and let us

525 stable release we meant 1.1.3 to be. Enjoy!

12541 | 538 Luke: Another Bug fix release. This one featuring a fix to the HTTP |
539 Method for MSN users and other MSN fixes. A big thanks to Stu and
540 Felipe Contreras for those. Stu also spent a long time in valgrind
541 and so this brings you a Gaim release with fewer memory leaks. This
542 release is on time primarily because I want to see the MSN fixes

10128 | 626 1.0.2 (10/19/2004): |
627 Stu: I'm new around here. I tried to reduce the number of bugs in the bug
628 tracker, but it turns out that the only way to achieve that is to actually
629 _fix_ the bugs. So I fixed a couple, and then sneaked some patches out of
630 the patch tracker to fix some others. Sadly the bug tracker was not
631 significantly affected, maybe if I learn C I'll be able to make more of an
632 impact. | |
633 | |
634 Luke: Don't let Stu fool you, he has done a marvelous job on this release,
635 and deserves a lot of credit for it. And a number of those bug fixes are
636 critical ones that he discovered and fixed himself. So go update. Now.
637 | |
638 Nathan: On the other hand, Nathan has done nothing for this release. Why
639 do we keep him around again?
640 | |
641 Tim: So, I'm married now, and in Huntsville. I don't remember if I did
642 anything for this release or not, probably not. Bleeter has been more
643 active lately though, perhaps we'll see lots of cool things from him
644 soon. | |

646 Sean: I'm down here with the "didn't do anything" guys.
647 | |
10089 | 648 1.0.1 (10/07/2004): |
649 Congratulations to Tim & Kim on their wedding!
650 | |
651 Sean: So, if you're playing along at home, you're aware that
652 incrementing the micro version number means that the API has
653 not changed at all. Although that itself is insignificant to
654 most everyone but plugin developers, but users won't find too
655 many significant changes. Consult ChangeLog. We're currently
656 branched for some major changes, so expect a really great 2.0.0
657 sometime relatively soon.
658 | |
659 Luke: Nothing much to see here, some bug fixes. Most of the work
660 is going towards the 2.0.0 release. We aren't quite sure when
661 that will be, and will keep the bug fix releases coming untill
662 all is ready. | |
663 | |
664 Christian: I would call this a ground-breaking release, but it isn't.
665 It seems like a good one, though. I dunno. I've been too busy at VMware,
666 unfortunately, but have some work that's just waiting to be finished up
667 for Gaim. Gaim 2.0.0 is going to rock. Gaim 3.0.0 will rock more.
668 Do you see a pattern? Thanks go out to Henry Jen for fixing up parts of
669 the gevolution plugin to support multiple addressbooks, and to all our
670 moms, for believing in us. Or something.
671 | |
672 Nathan: I got a new computer. It's fast. And has twice the bits!
673 | |
10034 | 674 1.0.0 (09/17/2004): |
675 Nathan: Hah! Bet you weren't expecting this! OK, if you were
676 paying any attention to the flame^H^H^H^H^Hthread on gaim-devel,
677 you might have been expecting this. But here it is, 1.0.0. Our
678 new versioning scheme has slightly more meaning than the older
679 one (expecially for plugin authors), but our 1.0(.0) release is
680 just as meaningless as we could have hoped. Enjoy!
681 | |
682 Luke: We've changed our pattern for version numbers with this
683 release, we are no longer simply counting versions. This release
684 then marks, not something traditionally "1.0" but the current
685 version of the api. When backwards compatability with that breaks
686 you'll see 2.0, more details in the faq. As a side note, if you
687 are reading this and are good with proxy code or with perl's XS C
688 bindings, please get in touch with me, my contact info is on the
689 website. Gaim could use your help.
690 | |
691 Mark: I love a circus.
692 | |
9872 | 693 0.82 (08/25/2004): |
9852 | 694 Rob: Woah, where did I come from? |
8540 | 695 |
9871 | 696 Mark: Lately I've been doing a lot more code maintenance/patch |
697 accepting/bug fixing type of work. And I think that's a really
698 good thing. I feel like Gaim is becoming more stable. It
9878 | 699 seems like we're lacking fewer features. It makes me warm. |
9871 | 700 Quick Robin! To the traverse wall! |
701 | |
9872 | 702 Nathan: Well, it looks like we stuck to the schedule again. Had |
703 we taken our dear sweet time, I might have had a chance to do
704 something cool for this release, but instead I stuck to the minor
705 stuff. <insert empty promises for the cool stuff i'll code for
706 next time here> | |
707 | |
9873 | 708 Tim: Lately I've been doing a lot more patch accepting, and a |
709 lot less actual coding. Unfortunately it has more to do with my
710 laziness than Gaim's progress. Like Nathan, I'm going to blame
711 our on time release schedule. But that didn't stop our Crazy
712 Patch Writers, or cpw's as grim now calls them, from writing
713 some good patches. So, instead of promising to code something
714 cool for next release, I'm going to promise that the cpw's will
715 code cool things for next release, and I might apply some of them.
716 | |
9877 | 717 Luke: I've been doing what I always do, committing patches, some |
718 better than others, and bugging other people to code stuff. Oh
719 and closing some bugs. Thanks to Dave West for joining the cpws
720 in helping to handle triage. This is mostly a bug fix release,
721 so PLEASE upgrade to it before submitting new bugs.
722 | |
9880 | 723 Kevin: Herman's been away, so Daniel Atallah and myself were given |
724 the task of preparing 0.82's Windows packages. After some feverish
725 plotting, we decided to update GTK and Daniel prepped an update to
726 libpng to address recent security advisories. Besides plotting and
727 a little bit of testing, this NEWS is all I really did. Oh, I also
728 rerefixed the transparency plugin... again! Our beloved Hermanator
729 should be back next time around, for 0.83.
730 | |
9688 | 731 0.81 (08/05/2004): |
732 Sean: Three weeks again! Sticking to schedules is awesome! Just
733 like Gaim v0.81. This is what we in the industry call a "bugfix
734 release." We closed over TWO HUNDRED bugs since 0.80. That's
735 awesome. Thanks to everyone who helped report, triage, fix, and

783 to a quick fix sent in by Cerulean Studios this morning. Reports say
784 they'll continue to try to break us, though, so don't be surprised
785 if your Yahoo cuts out again.
9543 | 786 |
9384 | 787 Luke: I was really distracted this cycle, I want to thank my co- |
9387 | 788 developers and our crazy patch writers for keeping things going. |
9384 | 789 We have a fairly long changelog for you this release, including some |
790 nice bug fixes and some much-requested new features, the ChangeLog
791 has all the details there of course. Enjoy!

9385 | 797 Tim: This release brings us /commands in the core, which hopefully |
798 works better, and Yahoo! buddy icons. Thanks to all the people I
799 bugged for packet captures, like Simguy, Bleeter, and odl. Yahoo!
800 broke again, so I did a little last minute work on the web
801 messenger stuff, but then Cerulean Studios was cool and fixed the
802 problem already, so all that code's disabled. I also finally added
803 the Yahoo! Japan support, for those of you with Yahoo! Japan
804 accounts. | |
9386 | 805 |
806 Mark: I fixed that icon animation thing that caused Gaim to lock-up.
807 I also stepped on something at the beach and I think there might be
808 a little rock or something in my foot now.
809 | |
9390 | 810 Nathan: I've been really busy, what with having a new job and all. |
811 I didn't think I had done anything, but apparently I fixed some
812 Jabber stuff, and some IPv6 stuff. I must have been sleepcoding
813 or something, because I haven't had time for such things. Ah well,
814 enjoy this release. We'll see what I can get to in the next 3 weeks.
815 | |
9124 | 816 0.78 (05/30/2004): |
9102 | 817 Luke: A very long time, once again, since the last release. I think |
818 its mostly worth it. A few of you will still have trouble with msn
819 but we've worked out a number of bugs even there. Thanks to heroic
820 efforts on the part of Mark, we closed 400 some odd reports this
821 month. We are also welcoming Tim to the project, a very active
822 crazy patch writer who has brought massive improvements to WYSIWYG
823 and direct im this release. Again, it still won't work for every
824 one, but it will work for more people than it used to. Most
825 noticably, this release brings a LARGE simplicfication of the
826 preferences available. Please don't complain if your favorite
827 preference is no longer there. Take some time to think about
828 how and if it could be useful to a majority of people who use
829 Gaim in ways nothing like you. You'll find that the answer will
830 usually be that the preference isn't all that important.
831 | |
9103 | 832 Tim: I continued with the other crazy patch writers in fixing those |
833 WYSIWYG bugs. Then they went and made me a developer. Which is cool.
834 They told me I could commit WYSIWYG and Yahoo! changes. So I went
835 and fixed IM Image and Direct Connect in AIM for some reason. I also
9106 | 836 added some new Yahoo! smileys at least. Also you change your link |
837 color in your ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file now. I might work on some of those
838 new Yahoo! features for next release, like buddy icons. But don't
839 count on it. Thanks to everyone who congratulated me. And thanks
840 to all our Crazy Patch Writers, who now expect me to apply all their
841 Crazy Patches. | |

9106 | 853 Gary: Congrats to Tim, no more competing for most ChangeLog entries. |
854 This means you _should_ be winning every release. Anyways, I didn't
855 finish nearly as much as I wanted to for this release but all of that
856 and then some should appear in 0.79.
857 | |
9108 | 858 Sean: I'll write my entry down here tonight. Removing preferences |
9395 | 859 was my big crusade this week, and the team did a great job at it, |
860 but I still have a nagging feeling that our preferences are still
861 overwhelming. Everyone's been doing a real great job; it's entirely
862 my fault we keep failing to meet our three-week schedule. Send your
863 complaints this way.
9108 | 864 |
9114 | 865 Nathan: I really didn't do much thanks to exams, and graduation, and all |
866 of that fun stuff. For next release, I'll have all new excuses, like my
867 new job, or maybe something I haven't even thought of yet. Oh yeah, and
868 a big warm welcome to Tim!
869 | |
8762 | 870 0.77 (04/22/2004): |
871 Sean: We're back to a somewhat regular release cycle now. Hooray!
9395 | 872 WYSIWYG is much improved in this release, and you can now copy and |
873 paste rich text to and from Gaim and other applications (see: Mozilla,
874 Evolution OpenOffice). Also, Novell has released their first release
875 of their GroupWise plugin, included in this release. Good stuff all
876 around. | |
8762 | 877 |
8763 | 878 Luke: Only a week "late" this time around, much nicer than the delay |
879 before the last release. Anyway, this release sees a HUGE number of
880 improvements to the WYSIWYG support, much thanks to all involved. If
881 you weren't impressed before, you should be now! This release also
882 sees the end of our TOC support, no one has been working on this in
883 some time and its causing problems. DON'T USE IT!. Also plugin
884 authors will want to take note of the fact that the plugin api version
885 changed. A nice solid release for you all :-)
886 | |
8764 | 887 Ethan: Once again I thought about doing some things and committed |
888 things that other people did. This development model is awesome. I
889 helped Mark refactor some stuff and our collective code ownership
890 helped us utilize a coherent system metaphor during our pair program-
891 ming sessions. It was extremely extreme. Look for some hard crypto
892 lovin' from yet another crazy contributor in the near future...
893 | |
8765 | 894 Ka-Hing: I actually did something for this release... or rather, the |
895 previous release, but LSchiere2 didn't commit that until this release.
896 So blame him. System logging is back, so you can log people's signon/
897 off/away/idle-ness again. There may be bugs with it, I don't know, not
898 like I use it. I will try to work on something that I will actually use
899 for the next release.
900 | |
901 Etan: Looking for someone to pair program with.

8540 | 911 0.76 (04/01/2004): |
8548 | 912 Sean: Yeah, it's been a long time since the last release, and despite |
913 what others may tell you, we were just really lazy. This is pretty
914 much just 0.75 again, but, like, someone changed the "Info" icon and
915 I think, like, the Chinese translation may have been updated. We did
916 nothing interesting on it at all. Others may tell you "we haven't just
917 been lazy," or "you guys will find that we've managed to do some neat
918 stuf in this one." They lie. All of them.
9102 | 919 |
8540 | 920 Luke: Okay, normally I wait for Sean to go first, but he said to commit. |
921 Its been a few months since the last release, but we haven't just been
922 lazy. A very long ChangeLog for you all. Most notably of course is the
923 addition of WYSIWYG input for chats and conversations. Many thanks to
924 DAYS of long work by Sean, Gary Kramlich, Kevin Stange, Tim Ringenbach,
9395 | 925 and Stu Tomlinson for their efforts writting, fixing, and testing |
926 this. Without the dedicated support of our crazy patch writters, this
927 release would have taken yet longer. Sean also has yahoo working again,
928 with some assistance from our friends over at Trillian, you may all
929 officially rejoice. We also have a large number of bug fixes, closing
930 more than 200 bug reports this month alone.

8542 | 939 Mark: Our crazy patch writers rock. Gary Kramlich, Tim Ringenbach, |
940 Kevin Stange, and Stu Tomlinson did an amazing job of tying up
941 loose ends and helping get this release out the door. Thanks guys!
8547 | 942 |
8543 | 943 Rob: My birthday is in a few days. I like cool stuff. Buy me something |
944 grand!! | |
8542 | 945 |
8547 | 946 Tim: Luke said write a NEWS, so I thought I would. There's a room |
947 list dialog now. And Nathan and I doubled the number of protocols that
948 can transfer files. After that I got lazy/busy and let Gary, Kevin,
949 and Stu fix all the bugs.
950 | |
8551 | 951 Nathan: Rob happens to share a birthday with my sister. So far she's |
952 been very vague about what she wants. She's not an easy person to shop
953 for. As for things you probably care more about, this release has so
954 much in it that I've forgotten about most of it. The stupidest of the
955 bugs from 0.75 are fixed. Jabber has a first pass at file transfer
956 support (no proxy support yet). SOCKS 5 proxy support may have gotten
957 a little better as a side-effect. Twinkies and penguin points to all
958 of the crazy patch writers, who did more than their fair share this
959 release. | |
960 | |
8553 | 961 Ethan: My birthday was yesterday, and not on the same day as Rob |
962 and Nathan's sister. And I don't mean that Rob and Nathan have the
963 same sister. For this release, I thought about making IRC better, I
964 thought about making Tcl better, and I committed patches from several
965 others who actually did these things. And probably some other
966 things, too. Let's hear it for crazy patch writers, and for the open
967 source philosophy that lets them get so CRAZY.
968 | |
8047 | 969 0.75 (01/09/2004): |
970 Rob: Woah, what's this? Me? Making a NEWS post!? Say it ain't so!
971 That's right, kiddos, I'm finally coming out of my reclusiveness.
972 I had a pretty shitty few months, and also just needed a break from
973 things. But, I'm back, and that's good. Right? Yes. And now,
974 a little word from Eric Warmenhoven.. :P
975 | |
8049 | 976 Eric: Ah, Rob and Eric. Just like the good ol' days. Now, if |
977 you'll excuse me, I have to go make some commits with Led Zeppelin
978 lyrics as my commit logs. heh. What do you mean, I look a lot
979 like Sean Egan? I'm... oh fine, you got me. It's really just Sean
980 in an Eric Warmenhoven costume.
981 | |
982 So, Yahoo! works again, and that's good. And 0.76 is going to have
983 something _very_ neat.
984 | |
8050 | 985 Nathan: You're running out of excuses to not use Jabber. Our chat |
986 support is now bar-some, quickly approaching bar-none! Everything
987 else in Jabber got neat improvements too. I'll leave it up to you
988 to figure out what they were.

1049 hopefully it's better than 0.73! Not that 0.73 didn't rock or
1050 anything, but for those users bit by its peculiar little bugs
1051 it wasn't as nice as this will be.
1052 | |
1053 Nathan: Jabber got some good tweaks, and logging doesn't eat
1054 memory until the cows come home. Which is good, because they
1055 said they'll be out until late.
1056 | |
1057 Luke: Always nice when directories get created correctly ;-)
1058 | |
7593 | 1059 0.73 (11/21/2003): |
1060 Nathan: This should be a really solid release. I fixed most if not
1061 all of the idiotic Jabber bugs from 0.72, and re-enabled the SASL
1062 login stuff, now that it is finalized in the XMPP drafts. Oh, and
1063 we now have a release notification plugin, so you can find out when
1064 the latest and greatest version of Gaim is out without breaking that
1065 reload button in your browser. There's other fun new stuff, but I
1066 forget what it is. | |

7394 | 1098 Ethan: In complete defiance of history, I did something this |
1099 release. It had to do with IRC. If I type here for long
1100 enough, I'm sure I'll remember what it was... Oh yeah, all of
1101 you paranoid people can hide your local username by changing
1102 your IRC account settings. I also want to note that we are
1103 aware that building Gaim is Harder than it Should Be on
1104 Solaris, and I am seeking solutions to some of the issues
1105 there. Everyone remember to give some love to the developers
1106 who actually did something of note this release (i.e. not me)!
1107 | |
7397 | 1108 Nathan: Jabber got a ton better this release, as I fixed most of the |
1109 bugs introduced in the last release. Registration works again, and
1110 the next person to break it is going to suffer. I also fixed a

1122 too many problems. There are a lot of little nice feature additions, |

1125 parts core/UI-split. Oh, and plugin authors are going to hate me again,
1126 as a lot of code (specifically, the conversations code and utility
1127 functions) changed names. This is a Good Thing (TM), as always, but may
1128 require modifications to some plugins. Not all, fortunately, but some
1129 :) Many SSL problems were fixed, though we still have some to go. If
1130 you don't have SSL, you now need it for MSN. MSN won't even load without

1145 I re-wrote the Jabber support from scratch, so now there's at least one
1146 person who knows what's going on with it. I got lost in the old code,
1147 even in the parts I wrote. It now supports the SASL login stuff from
1148 the XMPP protocol specs, and will automagically upgrade the conncetion
1149 to SSL if it's supported. If anything doesn't work like it did before,

1155 prepension and documentation for IRC and Tcl, and handle IRC errors
1156 more responsibly, but I've been meaning to do that for months.
7226 | 1157 Except the Tcl part, the Tcl plugin hasn't even existed for months. |
7225 | 1158 I figure if I write enough NEWS no one will notice I didn't do |

6134 | 1299 Sean: Although I tend to go right here in the two slot in NEWS, |
1300 we don't always commit in this order. This is the third time I've
1301 rewritten this because the jerks below me keep commiting while I'm
1302 writing causing mass conflictination. Grrr. Stupid jerks. Anyway,
1303 this is Gaim 0.65. Like other Gaim releases, this allows you to
1304 converse with people far away over the "Internet." That's about it.
1305 It's really not that interesting. In fact, I wouldn't even bother
1306 reading the other people's NEWS. It's all boring. There's some
1307 crap about forest fires and fangs and claws. It's really boring.
1308 Great, now Luke just committed NEWS causing more conflictination.
1309 I wouldn't bother reading his either. Oh, and I don't want to thank
1310 Megan (Cae) or Kevin (SimGuy). They're stupid jerks too. Grrr...
1311 | |
6129 | 1312 Mark: I actually did stuff for this release. Go me. I probably |
1313 shouldn't speak for all of us, but I'm going to anyway: We feel that
1314 this release is one of Gaim's best. It should be relatively bug
6135 | 1315 free, and the code is cleaner than ever, thanks to lots of work by |
6129 | 1316 Christian and Nathan. We had some help from a few civilians |
1317 finding and fixing bugs. Thanks to Megan (Cae), Ka-Hing Cheung
6130 | 1318 (javabsp), and Kevin Stange (SimGuy) for their work. Man, I was just |

6133 | 1344 Luke: Wow! Finally releasing 0.65! Christian, Nathan, and Mark have |
1345 worked really hard for this release, all the credit goes to them.
1346 The new preferences are awesome, and there are more bugs fixed for
1347 this release than in the last 3 or 4 releases. Your MSN should work
1348 reliably again, your preferences saved, your accounts resort, the
1349 list goes on and on. A couple preferences, most notably your buddy
1350 list sorting preference won't be imported, but almost all of them
1351 will be and its probly a good idea for you to take a second look

5558 | 1394 Mark: I never really have anything important to add. I'd just like to |
1395 thank Jack Daniels for his exquisite bug reports. And whiskey.
1396 | |
5559 | 1397 Nathan: I don't think I did anything for this release. I'm a bum. |

5409 | 1400 Rob: Wow, so, what can I say? I've been rather AWOL for the past few |
1401 releases. However, that's okay. Work has been pretty friggin hec-
1402 tic, so, that's my excuse. Work is finally going to be slowing down
1403 some. I plan to be doing more Gaim work. That makes me happy. That
1404 makes you happy. That makes us all happy. Now, I just need to
1405 finish rebuilding my car's engine. Engine rebuilds put the FU in
1406 fun! | |
5403 | 1407 |
1408 Sean: Yay! School is finally over. I have to give tons of cherry-
1409 flavored props to everyone whose been helping out while I stayed away
1410 from Gaim to keep myself from failing again, especially Christian and
1411 Nathan. | |
1412 | |
5404 | 1413 Luke: Okay, this is NOT a bug fix release, at least for those of you |
1414 who use MSN. Christian put in a TON of effort rewritting the MSN prpl,
1415 mega props to him on this release. In other news, we have alot of bugs
1416 fixed, and a goodly number of the translations are more up to date
1417 than they were in earlier releases. There are some other significant
1418 changes, but they are mostly backend stuff, yay for core/ui splits ;-)

5410 | 1440 Nathan: It seems like 0.62 was forever and a day ago. I had to look |
1441 at the ChangeLog to remember what I did. Apparently I made it so you
1442 can put chats in your buddy list. And then I tweaked a bunch of stuff
1443 and fixed a bunch of crashes. Then exams came, and then I went home
1444 for a week and left my laptop's power cable here at school, so I didn't
1445 get anything done. Jabber will get all sorts of fun new stuff for
1446 the next release. Really. ;-)
1447 | |
5403 | 1448 0.62 (04/23/2003): |
5193 | 1449 Sean: This is just another standard bi-weekly Gaim release. Nothing |
1450 really interesting, but it has some good bugfixes. Personally, I've
1451 been a bit removed from Gaim development lately what with school getting
1452 tough and stuff, but the rest of the guys have really been doing great

9395 | 1462 Luke: I didn't do much here besides the odd translation patch and a |
1463 couple bug fix patches. This is primarily a bug fix release, and much
1464 needed at that. Didn't get a chance to write sorting code, work has been
1465 busy. Hopeefully it will happen for 0.63.
5196 | 1466 |
5197 | 1467 Mark: Gaim is coming along quite beautimously. I'm going to eat |
1468 my Pop-tarts now. | |
1469 | |
9395 | 1470 Nathan: oh dot sixty two. There are a lot of bugs fixed in this |
1471 release, and one major new feature. Our Jabber plugin now supports
1472 XHTML-IM. In plain english, this means that you can now format your
1473 jabber messages, and other people will see the formatting. GtkIMHTML
1474 still needs some work to get it to parse valid XHTML-IM better, but that
1475 will come in time. That time would come sooner if my CS prof accepted
1476 "I was hacking on Gaim" as a valid excuse for an extension ;-)
5198 | 1477 |
5058 | 1478 0.61 (04/07/2003): |
5059 | 1479 Rob: Nathan commited his news first. However, I'm cooler so I'm putting |
1480 my entry above his. Yeah, so, there were some DnD issues with 0.60. I
1481 blame it on the rain. It was falling, falling. I blame it on the
1482 faucet. It drips all night.
1483 | |
9395 | 1484 Sean: I committed my news after Rob. I'm cooler than Nathan (by far) |
1485 but not as cool as Rob. So I go here. Actually, I didn't do anything
1486 since 0.60 other than commit some other peoples patches. The one from
1487 Dave Camp is cool. How 'bout this snow? Isn't that crazy? Oh, and
1488 thanks to everyone who wished me a happy birthday.
5073 | 1489 |
5058 | 1490 Nathan: You want frequent releases? You got 'em ;-) Chip wrote some |
1491 cool new pounce stuff, and things shouldn't get weird when you drag
1492 groups and buddies around. It's bad enough having 1 of some of my
1493 buddies on my list, I definitely don't need duplicates. Being that I
1494 have class in the morning, I'll just raise my juice glass for this one.

9395 | 1502 Luke: Okay, i'm probly the least cool, so I'll go last. I committed a |
1503 few patches from other people here, nothing earth shattering though. The
1504 biggest thing in this release is the group re-ordering bug fix, having
1505 that fixed will make for fewwer questions. Get used to using releases
1506 people, we want to use cvs for actual development :-).
5076 | 1507 |
5078 | 1508 Mark: I didn't want to write any news without actually having done |
1509 anything, so I fixed a meaningless compile warning. Boo-yeah.

1512 | |
5023 | 1513 0.60 (04/04/2003): |
1514 Rob: Wow. So, it has been a really long time since we started the
1515 gtk2 fork. It's finally ready for public consumption. Sean is about
1516 to go out and buy a case of beer. My roommate is downstairs right
1517 now pouring me a shot of his choice. Everyone, raise your beers if
1518 you've got them. It's been a cool almost 10-months of development.
1519 I hope you all enjoy. Drink'em if you got'em!
1520 | |
5024 | 1521 Sean: I'm writing this 3 minutes before my 21st birthday. Nobody can |
1522 believe we're finally ready to relase 0.60. Many thanks to everyone
1523 who helped out; I'm convinced that Gaim 0.60 is the best IM client to
1524 date (only to be bested by 0.61). There's WAY too much stuff to mention.
1525 Even the ChangeLog is somewhat incomplete. Yay, I'm 21 now! Everyone
1526 enjoy! :) | |
1527 | |
5025 | 1528 Nathan: Happy birthday Sean! Rob decided to let me start cleaning up |
1529 after everyone, so here I am. "sexy" is the only word that can be used
1530 to describe 0.60. Prepare to be shocked and amazed. /me raises his
1531 (shot) glass ;-) | |
1532 | |
9395 | 1533 Christian: Geeeeeze this took a long time. Worth it though! Personally, |
1534 I thought we'd all just give up on releases altogether and tell
1535 everybody just to grab CVS. I'm pretty happy with this release. I was
1536 able to contribute quite a bit to it. Makes me feel proud to be a gaim
1537 developer! I'm really looking forward to the future releases. I have
1538 some neat stuff planned. Yay, I'm still 19! Mmmm, Sierra Mist. Make me a

1568 nit picking. He likes to pick nits, nats, and umm, knots, I think.
3238 | 1569 |
3243 | 1570 Sean: This release has a long ChangeLog. Higlights include an |
1571 important security fix for MSN and a few nice new features.
1572 Not *much* cooler than 0.57--but we're making progress ;)
1573 | |

1576 | |
3173 | 1577 0.57 (04/25/2002): |
3180 | 1578 Rob: Not too much in this release, as Sean said below. (This is |
1579 what happens when the bottom person goes first.) New translation,
1580 a few fixes, secure msn hotmail logins, blah blah blah. As Sean
1581 said, the next release will be cooler. If only you could read
1582 our minds ;-). | |
1583 | |
3179 | 1584 Sean: Nothing too special here, but a critical Yahoo fix that |
1585 ensures Yahoo! will work when they discontinue the old protocol
1586 all the other 3rd party clients are using. Next release will be
1587 cooler, I promise.
3173 | 1588 |
3144 | 1589 0.56 (04/11/2002): |
1590 Rob: Well, what do you know. I have another headache. I always have
1591 these damned headaches. I got pissed off with the way GtkTree looks.
1592 I wanted to move to using GtkCTree. I think they're pretty.
1593 Unfortunately, GtkCTree sucks. After a little digging through
1594 the code, I managed to molest GtkTree into looking like
1595 GtkCTree. Thanks to everyone that helped track down that one
1596 annoying style problem.
1597 | |
1598 Sean: Hello. This is another minor release while Rob and I finish
1599 up on some bigger projects. We're reworking a lot of the UI to make
1600 it easier to use, nicer looking, and more compatible with gtk2.
1601 I've also been trying to bring the Yahoo plugin up to date, so it
1602 will work for Indian users and avoid a potential problem in the near
1603 future. | |
3114 | 1604 |
3113 | 1605 0.55 (03/29/2002): |
1606 Rob: 0.55 is here. I've been away for a few days on business. Sean
1607 has been on Spring Break. Therefore, this release is mostly a patch
1608 release. It does fix some bugs and makes a few thing slightly cooler,
1609 so it's better in that aspect, I suppose. Enjoy.
1610 | |
3110 | 1611 Sean: This is mostly a bugfix release. I'm on Spring Break, not |
1612 doing any coding at all. But lots of people sent in great patches
1613 anyway. Thanks guys!
3058 | 1614 |
3053 | 1615 0.54 (03/14/2002): |
1616 Rob: Well, here we are. 0.54. We got a lot of fun things in this
1617 release. Better working SSI, Image sending, protocol specific
1618 smiley faces, and a whole lot of triscuits. *gobble*
1619 | |
3054 | 1620 Sean: We fixed a lot of bugs in this one, and probably introduced |
1621 a bunch too. ;) We were both really busy, and did all the coding
1622 late at night when we were tired, so if something isn't working,
1623 it's probably just tired code. Enjoy the triscuits!

1627 nasty headache. You can all just deal. ;-)
1628 | |
1629 | |
1630 Sean: Neat Goodies! Whee!! Oscar got a lot of great additions.
1631 It can do Screen Name formatting, it can save and store your buddy
1632 list on the server, it can do typing notifications in Direct
1633 Connections, and yes, it can receive IM Images! Sending images will

1636 | |
2978 | 1637 |
2961 | 1638 0.52 (02/17/2002): |
2965 | 1639 Rob: Well, after a long delay we're finally ready for another release. |
1640 I finally got settled into my new apartment, the new job is going
1641 well, and I finally have internet connectivity again. You can expect
1642 us to be back on our usually bi-monthly schedule. Enjoy these fixen,
1643 as they resolve a few connectivity issues. :-)
1644 | |
1645 Sean: It looks like things are back on track now. Eric left which is
1646 sad. He's done so much for Gaim, and I know we're all thankful.
1647 Thanks Eric! I'll be stepping in and do more development, but I can
1648 never replace Eric. This release fixes a long-standing problem in
1649 MSN. If you've gotten errors when trying to connect to MSN, you want
1650 this release. If you've suddenly found yourself unable to connect to
1651 Yahoo!, you want this release too. The "neat goodies" will be in the

2008 | |
1289 | 2009 0.11.0-pre1 (12/03/2000): |
1199 | 2010 Rob: Hey guys! Guess what!? Yup, you're correct! It's the pre1 |
2011 release of 0.11.0. We have all sorts of goodies in this release!
2012 Check out the ChangeLog file. As always if you find any bugs,
2013 please report them on www.sourceforge.net/projects/gaim/
1195 | 2014 |
2015 You may find several small bugs as this is still a prerelease.
1192 | 2016 |
1199 | 2017 You may want to note that my IRC plugin does not have full |
2018 functionality as of yet. All of the important / commands will be
2019 added before the final release. Also, if someone could send me
2020 some good buddylist pixmaps for the irc plugin then I'd much
2021 appreciate it. Thanks to everyone who made this new release possible!
1194 | 2022 |
1195 | 2023 If you have any ideas, comments, or suggestions, please let us know |
1199 | 2024 either by e-mail or via the source forge message board at the URL |
2025 above. :) | |
1194 | 2026 |
1192 | 2027 |
1195 | 2028 Eric: So what was Yay! For Gaim!? Yay was the codename for the |
2029 Yahoo plugin. The whole point of all of these changes was I wanted to
2030 make a proof-of-concept plugin that would let Gaim sign into Yahoo. It
2031 turned out to be pretty much impossible with the old code. So,
2032 Rob and I hacked gaim so we could do just that. There's now a whole new
2033 class of plugins, Protocol Plugins, that let users dynamically add new
2034 protocols to Gaim. Just load the plugin, and create a new account that
2035 uses that protocol, and you're set! Yay! (Oscar and TOC are both still
2036 static. Gaim is, after all, primarily an AIM client.)

170 | 2205 0.9.15: |
219 | 2206 Hey boy's and girls. There's not much to say here this time. |
2207 We're loving Southern California, the new job's going great. We just
2208 got our company website up and the product development is going pretty
2209 smooth. Life's pretty sweet now.
2210 | |
2211 We've hacked up all kinds of goodies for you in 0.9.15. There's
2212 some file transfer (receive) support for those of you who have been
2213 wanting it for a while. There's some other misc. goodies tossed in as
2214 well. Enjoy!! Oh yeah, we need a new website. Come up with a sweet
2215 design and get in touch with me. The current site is at:
2216 http://www.marko.net/gaim
2217 | |
2218 Thanks much! | |

76 | 2221 0.9.14: |
104 | 2222 Well, there's a few random hacks and fixes in here, along with |
2223 a little suprise. You guessed it, kiddos, support for plugins! Happy
2224 hacking! | |
76 | 2225 |
56 | 2226 0.9.13: |
69 | 2227 Not much to say for this release. Bug fixes, That's all. Look |
2228 for the goodies I promised in 0.9.13 to appear in 0.9.14 which should be
2229 released very soon now.
56 | 2230 |
71 | 2231 By the way, our CVS is now hosted over at source forge. Go check |
2232 it out at http://www.sourceforge.net. Please check there before submitting
2233 any bug reports (You can read our CVS comments to see if we have fixed any
2234 problems). | |
2235 | |
7 | 2236 0.9.12: |
25 | 2237 Well guys, looks like we got some nifty things in this version. |
2238 TrueType Fonts are supported for those XFSTT buffs out there (or whatever
2239 else you use). A crap load of those plaguing memory leaks have FINALLY been
2240 fixed. My brother, Jeramey, and a new friend Peter Teichan helped stomp
2241 those babies out. A rad guy by the name of Eric Warmenhoven has been
2242 really sweet lately and has all but rewritten the Gnome Applet support :).
2243 He submitted patch after patch. I finally got annoyed with him (just kidding bud)
2244 and gave him CVS access. Look for Gnome Applet support in Gaim to start improving.
2245 That's about all for now. I wanted to get this release out there. File Receive
2246 support will be in 0.9.13 which is due out soon.
7 | 2247 |
0 | 2248 0.9.11: |
2249 Jeramey got a new Comfy Chair! Its very very comfy! Whee!
2250 Jim also had a little hyper-drunken moment and started hacking away at

2251 a new configuration format for Gaim. Looks like we're running .gaimrc |
0 | 2252 version 1 now. Gotta love it. I got bored and hacked in a couple font |
2253 properties that will, in time, contain more features. That's about it
2254 for this version -- cept for that memory leak we fixed. Shush! We're
2255 not plumbers! -- rob

2257 ** Extra special update **
2258 | |
2259 Well guys, it looks like we all stopped working on gaim, moved to California,
2260 and took up a new job. Don't worry though, those beach bums out here havent
2261 worn off on us yet. I've decided to pick up the Gaim torch myself and continue
2262 development ont he prohect. Hopefully we wont have any more five month braks in
2263 the project. Sorry about that, guys :)
2264 | |
2265 0.9.10: | |
2266 Umm. Dont ask. Silly memory leak. For those of you who
2267 wondered, you were losing about 256 bytes every 25 seconds for each
2268 person you have on your contact list. Make fun of us. Better yet ..
2269 Send us beer. We'll do better :)

2273 problems with Gaim working properly, please check out the FAQ file. It |
0 | 2274 contains a nice fix submitted by one of our users. I hope this works for |
2275 you guys! | |
2276 Jim appears to have intoxicated himself. This is, as always, a
2277 Good Thing (tm). His late-night adventure with the liquid-bread food group
2278 lead to the birth of a nice little feature called `The Lag-O-Meter'. Dont
2279 ask, just try it out :). It is pretty pointless if you have a super-fast
2280 connection but if you are a modem user, like many of us are, then try it out.
2281 There's also some idle preferences and some other little random
2282 bug fixes. Check'em out yo :)
2283 | |
2284 0.9.8: | |
2285 Get Along Lil' Doggies. Heh. Looks like we have yet another new
2286 version of gaim for you guys to play with. Be gentle now, it has a few
2287 new fetures. The HTML widget is now more robust and we have *da da da*
2288 HTTP proxy support.
2289 Oh By The Way, Do not pay too much attention to what we are doing
2290 with this release. We are all a little bit happy tonight. You must love
2291 life. This is a special release of gaim. We will be releasing some wonderful
2292 photographs soon .. or perhaps if we get the bloody webcam working then we
2293 will take a couple of quick snapshots.

2294 Looks like the Gaim developers convention (cool name huh) that we |
0 | 2295 had this weekend in Auburn, AL went wonderfully :). yum yum yum. Hahahah. Oh |
2296 by the way. Beware of insecure rednecks in the deli. Bad things.
2297 In (non)related news, Jeramey could not successfully slaughter the
2298 one pound hamburger that he ordered. (I think he could have done it but he
2299 wasn't feeling very well at the time).
2300 Oh Yes, New Logo Too :) You likes? Thanks, Naru!
2301 Just a little side-note: it looks like we didnt make the release that
2302 we had expected during the Gaim Convention. Maybe we partied too much? I am
2303 not sure. I remember watching the sun rise before I went to bed, though.
2304 Oh well. Here's your release! Enjoy!
2305 By The Way, we have uploaded our party pictures to a website.
2306 http://www.dorky.net/gaim/party/ They are nothing spectacular but I hope you
2307 enjoy them! :). | |
2308 | |
2309 0.9.7: | |
2310 Well, boys and girls, it's that time again! Yup, time for the good
2311 release fairy to come bless us with her infinite wisdom and divine presence.
2312 Umm, yeah, something like that. Anyways, this release has several little
2313 "bad" network fixes (as Jim likes to say) and a couple touch-ups to a few
2314 other features. It also features preliminary oscar support. Thanks to Jim
2315 and Adam ("the libfaim guy") hehe :) We have also corrected a problem with
2316 gaim not wainting to correctly save your password if you have an underscore
2317 in it. Thanks to w1za7d for pointing out the underscore problem. ' and \
2318 have also been fixed in passwords. :o)
2319 | |
2320 0.9.6: | |
2321 Sorry about the little segfaulting bugs in the past release. Rob
2322 is stupid. :). Anyways, they have been patched up and a couple new features
2323 have been added. I hope you guys enjoy.
2324 | |
2325 0.9.5: | |
2326 Well we added a myriad of new features to this release. (A lot of
2327 small buggie fixes too.) If you need a detailed list just check out the
2328 ChangeLog. We now have a new webpage design and have added a FAQ to the
2329 distribution. Before coming to us with any problems please take a quick
2330 look through the FAQ to make sure we havent already covered your question.
2331 Also, thanks to our beloved Web Monkey, FlynOrange, we have all
2332 learned the true power of foam weapons, slinkies, and whoopie cushions. Hmm
2333 gotta love those pranks, eh?
2334 | |
2335 0.8.0: | |
2336 Well, just starting the NEWS file. I'll try to remember what's new
2337 from the last version. Hmmm. BIG code reorg. Import/export, buddy pounce
2338 among the major new features. Autoconf script too, which is a big win.
2339 Apologies to those who submitted patches which haven't made it in.. I
2340 promise, the next version! This code reorg took up a lot of my time, and I
2341 want to get it out there.
