Print out SOAP response data as it's received in chunks. Sure, that
means more work when debugging, but at least we aren't printing out the
same stuff over and over. Unfortunately, that 16K buffer because of OS X
still sucks for word wrap performance.

17303 | 197 |
17304 | 198 Luke: I requested that we have a bug fix release, and so we have! |
199 Many, though unfortunately not all, of the reports that have been
200 submitted to us since 2.0.0 have been fixed now, and so you should
201 all have a much more stable experience with this release. I also
202 want to thank the many users who have resubmitted their reports
203 as we close out the old Source Forge bug tracker. If all goes well,
204 your report will get the attention it deserves as we continue to
205 work on Pidgin, Finch, and libpurple.
17303 | 206 |
17312 | 207 Nathan: A ton of fixes have gone into this release. The feedback |
208 we've gotten on 2.0.0 has been incredible. Hopefully we've resolved
209 most of the critical issues with 2.0.1. If we haven't, I'm sure
210 our wonderful users will let us hear about it. I seem to be
211 forgetting something...oh, right, I haven't promised any cool new

247 new member of the family (Finch, formerly gaim-console) has been born,

281 2.0.0beta7 (4/29/2007): |
16699 | 282 Sean: Beta 7. The final beta. A few major changes from beta6. For |
283 starters, we have some new names. That's pretty cool. We have a new
284 logo, to go along with it. And a lot of great icons! As Nathan mentions
285 below, we're totally back in the open now, having a signed agreement
286 from AOL that puts us in the clear. We all really regret having to go
287 completely dark for so long. Anyway, unlike betas1-6, which were of
288 normal release quality, this one is actually beta quality. There are
289 a few significant known issues, and a lot of changes that need a lot
290 of real-world testing. So, if you'd like to help us out, give it a
291 whirl, and let us know if you run into any major issues.
292 | |
16005 | 293 Nathan: So, the secret is out now. We renamed to Pidgin. I'd just |
294 like to apologize to everyone we've had to keep in the dark for the
295 last however-many months. I know it looked like development slowed
296 to a crawl, but in reality we've been working pretty hard to get
297 2.0.0 out the door, without getting into any legal trouble. I
298 realize that if we were some big corporation, we'd be getting flamed
299 about this secrecy for months. Please try to remember that we're
300 just a bunch of geeks who were scared of legal stuff (well, at least
301 I was. Scared, that is). The bottom line is that we're out in the
302 open again, and fully plan to stay that way. We're also opening up
303 the mail archives from the secretive past few months. You can scan
16706 | 304 through them if you want, or I can summarize. "Are the lawyers done |
16005 | 305 yet? No. Now? No. How about now? No." All lawyer jokes aside, |
306 I'm grateful to our legal team for crossing all the 't's and dotting
307 all the lowercase 'j's to get us the deal we got. Anyways, thanks
308 for your patience, and on to 2.0.1!
309 | |
16703 | 310 Gary: Well my silence, and our silence has ended. Finally the name |
311 change is over and done with and we can go back to a normal dev
312 cycle. Now if I can just get myself back onto a normal dev cycle,
313 but that's another story all together.

12527 | 395 2.0.0beta1 (12/17/2005): |
12541 | 396 Sean: I think Nathan sums everything up really well below. There's still |
397 a bunch we want to add (and remove) before the official release, but we
398 really want to start getting feedback about what's good and what's not.
399 So, please, be vocal about this beta!
12519 | 400 |
12541 | 401 Nathan: 15 months since we branched oldstatus, and started working on |
402 the behemoth that is 2.0.0. In that time, we've added a couple new
403 protocols, we had a few crazy patch writers become developers, and
404 had a few more people step up to be crazy patch writers. Sean wrote
405 a book, and we arbitrarily decided to make a version 1.0.0, and a
406 new versioning scheme. We got new artwork, and added almost 200 lines
407 to the ChangeLog. We've watched 2 major GTK+ releases, and added all
408 kinds of features using them. OK, I've wasted enough bits here. This
409 beta rocks, but it is a beta. Treat it as such, and enjoy!

419 here, but not all of them are finished or debugged. But then that's
420 why it's called a beta. Conversations are now contact-aware, and
421 there's a new status selector. There's smooth scrolling on incoming
422 messages as well. Our Crazy Patch Writers have been doing a good
423 job too, it seems like we're never lacking some patches in the
424 tracker to review. | |
12514 | 425 |
12541 | 426 Etan: I know I'm not going to be able to think of all the things I should |
427 talk about here so I'll just go with the stuff I remember. Adding buddies
428 on ejabberd jabber servers should work more correctly now (it's possible
429 adding buddies on other servers is a bit broken currently I'm still
430 looking into it). There are still other jabber issues I'm looking into
431 with handling of buddies.
432 In other topics, I finally brought my Accounts menu into gaim, though the
433 current example of it isn't exactly what I had in mind, anyone with any
434 suggestions/comments/etc about it please speak up.
435 Other than the stuff I'm sure I'm forgetting to mention this beta should
436 be awesome as gaim 2.0.0 is going to be awesome. Have fun with it.
12514 | 437 |
12541 | 438 Luke: pretty much everything important has been said, so this is going to |
439 be rather repetative. This is a beta folks, so it will have bugs. It
440 will crash unexpectedly. Perhaps even frequently. Use it at your peril.
441 But do use it (though you might want to back up ~/.gaim first), and let us

505 rather unavoidable as the previous code did not keep track of
506 which account each buddy belonged to.

653 Stu: I'm new around here. I tried to reduce the number of bugs in the bug
654 tracker, but it turns out that the only way to achieve that is to actually
655 _fix_ the bugs. So I fixed a couple, and then sneaked some patches out of
656 the patch tracker to fix some others. Sadly the bug tracker was not
657 significantly affected, maybe if I learn C I'll be able to make more of an
658 impact. | |
659 | |
660 Luke: Don't let Stu fool you, he has done a marvelous job on this release,
661 and deserves a lot of credit for it. And a number of those bug fixes are
662 critical ones that he discovered and fixed himself. So go update. Now.
663 | |
664 Nathan: On the other hand, Nathan has done nothing for this release. Why
665 do we keep him around again?
666 | |
667 Tim: So, I'm married now, and in Huntsville. I don't remember if I did
668 anything for this release or not, probably not. Bleeter has been more
669 active lately though, perhaps we'll see lots of cool things from him

675 Congratulations to Tim & Kim on their wedding!
676 | |
677 Sean: So, if you're playing along at home, you're aware that
678 incrementing the micro version number means that the API has
679 not changed at all. Although that itself is insignificant to
680 most everyone but plugin developers, but users won't find too
681 many significant changes. Consult ChangeLog. We're currently
682 branched for some major changes, so expect a really great 2.0.0
683 sometime relatively soon.
684 | |
685 Luke: Nothing much to see here, some bug fixes. Most of the work
686 is going towards the 2.0.0 release. We aren't quite sure when
687 that will be, and will keep the bug fix releases coming untill
688 all is ready. | |
689 | |
690 Christian: I would call this a ground-breaking release, but it isn't.
691 It seems like a good one, though. I dunno. I've been too busy at VMware,
692 unfortunately, but have some work that's just waiting to be finished up
693 for Gaim. Gaim 2.0.0 is going to rock. Gaim 3.0.0 will rock more.
694 Do you see a pattern? Thanks go out to Henry Jen for fixing up parts of
695 the gevolution plugin to support multiple addressbooks, and to all our
696 moms, for believing in us. Or something.
697 | |
698 Nathan: I got a new computer. It's fast. And has twice the bits!
699 | |
10034 | 700 1.0.0 (09/17/2004): |
701 Nathan: Hah! Bet you weren't expecting this! OK, if you were
702 paying any attention to the flame^H^H^H^H^Hthread on gaim-devel,
703 you might have been expecting this. But here it is, 1.0.0. Our
704 new versioning scheme has slightly more meaning than the older
705 one (expecially for plugin authors), but our 1.0(.0) release is
706 just as meaningless as we could have hoped. Enjoy!
707 | |
708 Luke: We've changed our pattern for version numbers with this
709 release, we are no longer simply counting versions. This release
710 then marks, not something traditionally "1.0" but the current
711 version of the api. When backwards compatability with that breaks
712 you'll see 2.0, more details in the faq. As a side note, if you
713 are reading this and are good with proxy code or with perl's XS C
714 bindings, please get in touch with me, my contact info is on the

9852 | 720 Rob: Woah, where did I come from? |
8540 | 721 |
9871 | 722 Mark: Lately I've been doing a lot more code maintenance/patch |
723 accepting/bug fixing type of work. And I think that's a really
724 good thing. I feel like Gaim is becoming more stable. It
9878 | 725 seems like we're lacking fewer features. It makes me warm. |
9871 | 726 Quick Robin! To the traverse wall! |
727 | |
9872 | 728 Nathan: Well, it looks like we stuck to the schedule again. Had |
729 we taken our dear sweet time, I might have had a chance to do
730 something cool for this release, but instead I stuck to the minor
731 stuff. <insert empty promises for the cool stuff i'll code for
732 next time here> | |
733 | |
9873 | 734 Tim: Lately I've been doing a lot more patch accepting, and a |
735 lot less actual coding. Unfortunately it has more to do with my
736 laziness than Gaim's progress. Like Nathan, I'm going to blame
737 our on time release schedule. But that didn't stop our Crazy
738 Patch Writers, or cpw's as grim now calls them, from writing
739 some good patches. So, instead of promising to code something
740 cool for next release, I'm going to promise that the cpw's will
741 code cool things for next release, and I might apply some of them.
742 | |
9877 | 743 Luke: I've been doing what I always do, committing patches, some |
744 better than others, and bugging other people to code stuff. Oh
745 and closing some bugs. Thanks to Dave West for joining the cpws
746 in helping to handle triage. This is mostly a bug fix release,
747 so PLEASE upgrade to it before submitting new bugs.
748 | |
9880 | 749 Kevin: Herman's been away, so Daniel Atallah and myself were given |
750 the task of preparing 0.82's Windows packages. After some feverish
751 plotting, we decided to update GTK and Daniel prepped an update to
752 libpng to address recent security advisories. Besides plotting and
753 a little bit of testing, this NEWS is all I really did. Oh, I also
754 rerefixed the transparency plugin... again! Our beloved Hermanator
755 should be back next time around, for 0.83.

9690 | 774 Mark: I was going to point out that we closed an insane amount of |
775 bugs for this release, but Sean already did that. I feel like
776 we've had some really talented new contributors contributing
777 recently. I won't say names... but watch your backs. Or something.
778 | |
9691 | 779 Nathan: I did next to nothing for this release. I am however |
780 settled in to my new job, and in a couple days, I should be settled
781 into my new domicile. If the DSL gods are in a good mood, I'll
782 have a connection there shortly, and can start being useful again.
783 | |
9537 | 784 0.80 (07/15/2004): |
785 Sean: Three weeks! Hooray for timeliness! I didn't do much here
786 but drag-and-droppable file transfers. Drag something into a
787 conversation window, and it will be sent. Kinda neat.
788 | |
9540 | 789 Mark: We have a small ant problem here. I can't help but think |
9541 | 790 I somehow brought this upon myself. |
9540 | 791 |
9542 | 792 Tim: I don't really have any news, but at least I don't have an |
793 ant problem either. You might think I've been hard at work on
794 Gaim-vv, but I haven't, I've just been lazy. I plan on doing
795 some cool things "soon" though, both with Gaim and Gaim-vv.
796 Bleeter sent me some nice dumps I need to implement yet.
797 | |
9543 | 798 Luke: We have a nice timely release, with a Changelog that seems |
799 small, but remember, this is summer, and people have lives. SILC
800 and Zephyr are making good progress from our Crazy Patch Writters,
801 and everyone begging to send files to people not on their buddy
802 list will be happy. good stuff. No, the msn buddy icon scalling
803 problem isn't fixed yet, maybe next release
804 | |
9382 | 805 0.79 (06/24/2004): |
806 Sean: We've moved to a three-week release cycle which we'll
807 hopefully be able to keep up more realistically than a two-week
808 cycle. Yahoo! went and broke last night, but it's fixed now thanks
809 to a quick fix sent in by Cerulean Studios this morning. Reports say
810 they'll continue to try to break us, though, so don't be surprised
811 if your Yahoo cuts out again.
9543 | 812 |
9384 | 813 Luke: I was really distracted this cycle, I want to thank my co- |
9387 | 814 developers and our crazy patch writers for keeping things going. |
9384 | 815 We have a fairly long changelog for you this release, including some |
816 nice bug fixes and some much-requested new features, the ChangeLog
817 has all the details there of course. Enjoy!

9385 | 823 Tim: This release brings us /commands in the core, which hopefully |
824 works better, and Yahoo! buddy icons. Thanks to all the people I
825 bugged for packet captures, like Simguy, Bleeter, and odl. Yahoo!
826 broke again, so I did a little last minute work on the web
827 messenger stuff, but then Cerulean Studios was cool and fixed the
828 problem already, so all that code's disabled. I also finally added
829 the Yahoo! Japan support, for those of you with Yahoo! Japan
830 accounts. | |
9386 | 831 |
832 Mark: I fixed that icon animation thing that caused Gaim to lock-up.
833 I also stepped on something at the beach and I think there might be
834 a little rock or something in my foot now.
835 | |
9390 | 836 Nathan: I've been really busy, what with having a new job and all. |
837 I didn't think I had done anything, but apparently I fixed some
838 Jabber stuff, and some IPv6 stuff. I must have been sleepcoding
839 or something, because I haven't had time for such things. Ah well,
840 enjoy this release. We'll see what I can get to in the next 3 weeks.
841 | |
9124 | 842 0.78 (05/30/2004): |
9102 | 843 Luke: A very long time, once again, since the last release. I think |
844 its mostly worth it. A few of you will still have trouble with msn
845 but we've worked out a number of bugs even there. Thanks to heroic
846 efforts on the part of Mark, we closed 400 some odd reports this
847 month. We are also welcoming Tim to the project, a very active
848 crazy patch writer who has brought massive improvements to WYSIWYG
849 and direct im this release. Again, it still won't work for every
850 one, but it will work for more people than it used to. Most
851 noticably, this release brings a LARGE simplicfication of the
852 preferences available. Please don't complain if your favorite
853 preference is no longer there. Take some time to think about
854 how and if it could be useful to a majority of people who use
855 Gaim in ways nothing like you. You'll find that the answer will
856 usually be that the preference isn't all that important.
857 | |
9103 | 858 Tim: I continued with the other crazy patch writers in fixing those |
859 WYSIWYG bugs. Then they went and made me a developer. Which is cool.
860 They told me I could commit WYSIWYG and Yahoo! changes. So I went
861 and fixed IM Image and Direct Connect in AIM for some reason. I also
9106 | 862 added some new Yahoo! smileys at least. Also you change your link |
863 color in your ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file now. I might work on some of those
864 new Yahoo! features for next release, like buddy icons. But don't
865 count on it. Thanks to everyone who congratulated me. And thanks
866 to all our Crazy Patch Writers, who now expect me to apply all their
867 Crazy Patches. | |

9106 | 879 Gary: Congrats to Tim, no more competing for most ChangeLog entries. |
880 This means you _should_ be winning every release. Anyways, I didn't
881 finish nearly as much as I wanted to for this release but all of that
882 and then some should appear in 0.79.
883 | |
9108 | 884 Sean: I'll write my entry down here tonight. Removing preferences |
9395 | 885 was my big crusade this week, and the team did a great job at it, |
886 but I still have a nagging feeling that our preferences are still
887 overwhelming. Everyone's been doing a real great job; it's entirely
888 my fault we keep failing to meet our three-week schedule. Send your
889 complaints this way.
9108 | 890 |
9114 | 891 Nathan: I really didn't do much thanks to exams, and graduation, and all |
892 of that fun stuff. For next release, I'll have all new excuses, like my
893 new job, or maybe something I haven't even thought of yet. Oh yeah, and
894 a big warm welcome to Tim!
895 | |
8762 | 896 0.77 (04/22/2004): |
897 Sean: We're back to a somewhat regular release cycle now. Hooray!
9395 | 898 WYSIWYG is much improved in this release, and you can now copy and |
899 paste rich text to and from Gaim and other applications (see: Mozilla,
900 Evolution OpenOffice). Also, Novell has released their first release
901 of their GroupWise plugin, included in this release. Good stuff all
902 around. | |
8762 | 903 |
8763 | 904 Luke: Only a week "late" this time around, much nicer than the delay |
905 before the last release. Anyway, this release sees a HUGE number of
906 improvements to the WYSIWYG support, much thanks to all involved. If
907 you weren't impressed before, you should be now! This release also
908 sees the end of our TOC support, no one has been working on this in
909 some time and its causing problems. DON'T USE IT!. Also plugin
910 authors will want to take note of the fact that the plugin api version
911 changed. A nice solid release for you all :-)
912 | |
8764 | 913 Ethan: Once again I thought about doing some things and committed |
914 things that other people did. This development model is awesome. I
915 helped Mark refactor some stuff and our collective code ownership
916 helped us utilize a coherent system metaphor during our pair program-
917 ming sessions. It was extremely extreme. Look for some hard crypto
918 lovin' from yet another crazy contributor in the near future...
919 | |
8765 | 920 Ka-Hing: I actually did something for this release... or rather, the |
921 previous release, but LSchiere2 didn't commit that until this release.
922 So blame him. System logging is back, so you can log people's signon/
923 off/away/idle-ness again. There may be bugs with it, I don't know, not
924 like I use it. I will try to work on something that I will actually use
925 for the next release.
926 | |
927 Etan: Looking for someone to pair program with.

8540 | 937 0.76 (04/01/2004): |
8548 | 938 Sean: Yeah, it's been a long time since the last release, and despite |
939 what others may tell you, we were just really lazy. This is pretty
940 much just 0.75 again, but, like, someone changed the "Info" icon and
941 I think, like, the Chinese translation may have been updated. We did
942 nothing interesting on it at all. Others may tell you "we haven't just

947 Its been a few months since the last release, but we haven't just been
948 lazy. A very long ChangeLog for you all. Most notably of course is the
949 addition of WYSIWYG input for chats and conversations. Many thanks to
950 DAYS of long work by Sean, Gary Kramlich, Kevin Stange, Tim Ringenbach,
9395 | 951 and Stu Tomlinson for their efforts writting, fixing, and testing |
952 this. Without the dedicated support of our crazy patch writters, this
953 release would have taken yet longer. Sean also has yahoo working again,
954 with some assistance from our friends over at Trillian, you may all

8542 | 965 Mark: Our crazy patch writers rock. Gary Kramlich, Tim Ringenbach, |

970 grand!! | |
8542 | 971 |
8547 | 972 Tim: Luke said write a NEWS, so I thought I would. There's a room |
973 list dialog now. And Nathan and I doubled the number of protocols that
974 can transfer files. After that I got lazy/busy and let Gary, Kevin,
975 and Stu fix all the bugs.
976 | |
8551 | 977 Nathan: Rob happens to share a birthday with my sister. So far she's |
978 been very vague about what she wants. She's not an easy person to shop
979 for. As for things you probably care more about, this release has so
980 much in it that I've forgotten about most of it. The stupidest of the
981 bugs from 0.75 are fixed. Jabber has a first pass at file transfer
982 support (no proxy support yet). SOCKS 5 proxy support may have gotten
983 a little better as a side-effect. Twinkies and penguin points to all
984 of the crazy patch writers, who did more than their fair share this
985 release. | |
986 | |
8553 | 987 Ethan: My birthday was yesterday, and not on the same day as Rob |
988 and Nathan's sister. And I don't mean that Rob and Nathan have the
989 same sister. For this release, I thought about making IRC better, I
990 thought about making Tcl better, and I committed patches from several
991 others who actually did these things. And probably some other
992 things, too. Let's hear it for crazy patch writers, and for the open
993 source philosophy that lets them get so CRAZY.
994 | |
8047 | 995 0.75 (01/09/2004): |
996 Rob: Woah, what's this? Me? Making a NEWS post!? Say it ain't so!
997 That's right, kiddos, I'm finally coming out of my reclusiveness.
998 I had a pretty shitty few months, and also just needed a break from
999 things. But, I'm back, and that's good. Right? Yes. And now,
1000 a little word from Eric Warmenhoven.. :P
1001 | |
8049 | 1002 Eric: Ah, Rob and Eric. Just like the good ol' days. Now, if |
1003 you'll excuse me, I have to go make some commits with Led Zeppelin
1004 lyrics as my commit logs. heh. What do you mean, I look a lot
1005 like Sean Egan? I'm... oh fine, you got me. It's really just Sean
1006 in an Eric Warmenhoven costume.
1007 | |
1008 So, Yahoo! works again, and that's good. And 0.76 is going to have
1009 something _very_ neat.
1010 | |
8050 | 1011 Nathan: You're running out of excuses to not use Jabber. Our chat |
1012 support is now bar-some, quickly approaching bar-none! Everything
1013 else in Jabber got neat improvements too. I'll leave it up to you
1014 to figure out what they were.

1027 Unfortunately, he took out the chat support in doing so. So use

1072 Sean: Christian and Nathan were wrong.
1073 | |
1074 Ethan: I don't know how solid or good this release will be, but
1075 hopefully it's better than 0.73! Not that 0.73 didn't rock or
1076 anything, but for those users bit by its peculiar little bugs
1077 it wasn't as nice as this will be.
1078 | |
1079 Nathan: Jabber got some good tweaks, and logging doesn't eat
1080 memory until the cows come home. Which is good, because they
1081 said they'll be out until late.

1084 | |
7593 | 1085 0.73 (11/21/2003): |
1086 Nathan: This should be a really solid release. I fixed most if not
1087 all of the idiotic Jabber bugs from 0.72, and re-enabled the SASL
1088 login stuff, now that it is finalized in the XMPP drafts. Oh, and
1089 we now have a release notification plugin, so you can find out when
1090 the latest and greatest version of Gaim is out without breaking that
1091 reload button in your browser. There's other fun new stuff, but I

1127 you paranoid people can hide your local username by changing
1128 your IRC account settings. I also want to note that we are
1129 aware that building Gaim is Harder than it Should Be on
1130 Solaris, and I am seeking solutions to some of the issues
1131 there. Everyone remember to give some love to the developers

1148 too many problems. There are a lot of little nice feature additions, |

1150 in a couple of releases, assuming we can get the remaining two or three
1151 parts core/UI-split. Oh, and plugin authors are going to hate me again,
1152 as a lot of code (specifically, the conversations code and utility
1153 functions) changed names. This is a Good Thing (TM), as always, but may
1154 require modifications to some plugins. Not all, fortunately, but some
1155 :) Many SSL problems were fixed, though we still have some to go. If
1156 you don't have SSL, you now need it for MSN. MSN won't even load without

1173 even in the parts I wrote. It now supports the SASL login stuff from

1182 more responsibly, but I've been meaning to do that for months.
7226 | 1183 Except the Tcl part, the Tcl plugin hasn't even existed for months. |

6134 | 1325 Sean: Although I tend to go right here in the two slot in NEWS, |
1326 we don't always commit in this order. This is the third time I've
1327 rewritten this because the jerks below me keep commiting while I'm
1328 writing causing mass conflictination. Grrr. Stupid jerks. Anyway,
1329 this is Gaim 0.65. Like other Gaim releases, this allows you to
1330 converse with people far away over the "Internet." That's about it.
1331 It's really not that interesting. In fact, I wouldn't even bother
1332 reading the other people's NEWS. It's all boring. There's some
1333 crap about forest fires and fangs and claws. It's really boring.
1334 Great, now Luke just committed NEWS causing more conflictination.
1335 I wouldn't bother reading his either. Oh, and I don't want to thank
1336 Megan (Cae) or Kevin (SimGuy). They're stupid jerks too. Grrr...
1337 | |
6129 | 1338 Mark: I actually did stuff for this release. Go me. I probably |
1339 shouldn't speak for all of us, but I'm going to anyway: We feel that
1340 this release is one of Gaim's best. It should be relatively bug
6135 | 1341 free, and the code is cleaner than ever, thanks to lots of work by |
6129 | 1342 Christian and Nathan. We had some help from a few civilians |
1343 finding and fixing bugs. Thanks to Megan (Cae), Ka-Hing Cheung

6133 | 1370 Luke: Wow! Finally releasing 0.65! Christian, Nathan, and Mark have |
1371 worked really hard for this release, all the credit goes to them.
1372 The new preferences are awesome, and there are more bugs fixed for
1373 this release than in the last 3 or 4 releases. Your MSN should work
1374 reliably again, your preferences saved, your accounts resort, the

5562 | 1398 Rob: I didn't do anything this release either. We're under a crunch |
1399 week at work. Friday is the end of the crunch. Hooray!! Thanks for
1400 all of your hard work, guys :).
1401 | |
5555 | 1402 Sean: Unlike every other time we say, "the next release will be loaded |
1403 with cool new features, this time, we really mean it. In fact, they're
1404 already in CVS (don't use CVS). The only obvious new feature for 0.64
1405 is buddy list sorting. This has been much requested and can be set in
1406 the buddy list preferences. You can sort by name, by status, and even
1407 by log file size--putting people you talk to most at the top. Plugins
1408 can even easily add their own sorting methods. It's all very cool. I
5559 | 1409 want to thank Luke and Ka-Hing for their initial work on it. And yes, |
5555 | 1410 I did make my entire NEWS entry justified on purpose. |

1427 releases. However, that's okay. Work has been pretty friggin hec-
1428 tic, so, that's my excuse. Work is finally going to be slowing down

1435 flavored props to everyone whose been helping out while I stayed away
1436 from Gaim to keep myself from failing again, especially Christian and
1437 Nathan. | |
1438 | |
5404 | 1439 Luke: Okay, this is NOT a bug fix release, at least for those of you |
1440 who use MSN. Christian put in a TON of effort rewritting the MSN prpl,
1441 mega props to him on this release. In other news, we have alot of bugs
1442 fixed, and a goodly number of the translations are more up to date
1443 than they were in earlier releases. There are some other significant
1444 changes, but they are mostly backend stuff, yay for core/ui splits ;-)

5410 | 1466 Nathan: It seems like 0.62 was forever and a day ago. I had to look |
1467 at the ChangeLog to remember what I did. Apparently I made it so you
1468 can put chats in your buddy list. And then I tweaked a bunch of stuff
1469 and fixed a bunch of crashes. Then exams came, and then I went home
1470 for a week and left my laptop's power cable here at school, so I didn't
1471 get anything done. Jabber will get all sorts of fun new stuff for

5193 | 1475 Sean: This is just another standard bi-weekly Gaim release. Nothing |
1476 really interesting, but it has some good bugfixes. Personally, I've
1477 been a bit removed from Gaim development lately what with school getting

9395 | 1488 Luke: I didn't do much here besides the odd translation patch and a |
1489 couple bug fix patches. This is primarily a bug fix release, and much
1490 needed at that. Didn't get a chance to write sorting code, work has been
1491 busy. Hopeefully it will happen for 0.63.
5196 | 1492 |
5197 | 1493 Mark: Gaim is coming along quite beautimously. I'm going to eat |
1494 my Pop-tarts now. | |
1495 | |
9395 | 1496 Nathan: oh dot sixty two. There are a lot of bugs fixed in this |
1497 release, and one major new feature. Our Jabber plugin now supports
1498 XHTML-IM. In plain english, this means that you can now format your
1499 jabber messages, and other people will see the formatting. GtkIMHTML
1500 still needs some work to get it to parse valid XHTML-IM better, but that
1501 will come in time. That time would come sooner if my CS prof accepted
1502 "I was hacking on Gaim" as a valid excuse for an extension ;-)
5198 | 1503 |
5058 | 1504 0.61 (04/07/2003): |
5059 | 1505 Rob: Nathan commited his news first. However, I'm cooler so I'm putting |
1506 my entry above his. Yeah, so, there were some DnD issues with 0.60. I
1507 blame it on the rain. It was falling, falling. I blame it on the
1508 faucet. It drips all night.
1509 | |
9395 | 1510 Sean: I committed my news after Rob. I'm cooler than Nathan (by far) |
1511 but not as cool as Rob. So I go here. Actually, I didn't do anything
1512 since 0.60 other than commit some other peoples patches. The one from
1513 Dave Camp is cool. How 'bout this snow? Isn't that crazy? Oh, and
1514 thanks to everyone who wished me a happy birthday.
5073 | 1515 |
5058 | 1516 Nathan: You want frequent releases? You got 'em ;-) Chip wrote some |
1517 cool new pounce stuff, and things shouldn't get weird when you drag
1518 groups and buddies around. It's bad enough having 1 of some of my

1530 biggest thing in this release is the group re-ordering bug fix, having

1540 Rob: Wow. So, it has been a really long time since we started the
1541 gtk2 fork. It's finally ready for public consumption. Sean is about
1542 to go out and buy a case of beer. My roommate is downstairs right

1545 I hope you all enjoy. Drink'em if you got'em!
1546 | |
5024 | 1547 Sean: I'm writing this 3 minutes before my 21st birthday. Nobody can |
1548 believe we're finally ready to relase 0.60. Many thanks to everyone
1549 who helped out; I'm convinced that Gaim 0.60 is the best IM client to
1550 date (only to be bested by 0.61). There's WAY too much stuff to mention.
1551 Even the ChangeLog is somewhat incomplete. Yay, I'm 21 now! Everyone

1627 I've also been trying to bring the Yahoo plugin up to date, so it
1628 will work for Indian users and avoid a potential problem in the near
1629 future. | |
3114 | 1630 |
3113 | 1631 0.55 (03/29/2002): |
1632 Rob: 0.55 is here. I've been away for a few days on business. Sean
1633 has been on Spring Break. Therefore, this release is mostly a patch
1634 release. It does fix some bugs and makes a few thing slightly cooler,
1635 so it's better in that aspect, I suppose. Enjoy.
1636 | |
3110 | 1637 Sean: This is mostly a bugfix release. I'm on Spring Break, not |
1638 doing any coding at all. But lots of people sent in great patches
1639 anyway. Thanks guys!
3058 | 1640 |
3053 | 1641 0.54 (03/14/2002): |
1642 Rob: Well, here we are. 0.54. We got a lot of fun things in this
1643 release. Better working SSI, Image sending, protocol specific
1644 smiley faces, and a whole lot of triscuits. *gobble*
1645 | |
3054 | 1646 Sean: We fixed a lot of bugs in this one, and probably introduced |
1647 a bunch too. ;) We were both really busy, and did all the coding
1648 late at night when we were tired, so if something isn't working,
1649 it's probably just tired code. Enjoy the triscuits!
2994 | 1650 |
2993 | 1651 0.53 (02/28/2002): |
1652 Rob: Well, we missed yesterday's release. That's Okay, I head a
1653 nasty headache. You can all just deal. ;-)
1654 | |
1655 | |
1656 Sean: Neat Goodies! Whee!! Oscar got a lot of great additions.
1657 It can do Screen Name formatting, it can save and store your buddy
1658 list on the server, it can do typing notifications in Direct
1659 Connections, and yes, it can receive IM Images! Sending images will
1660 be added in the next release. MSN and Yahoo! can do typing
1661 notification too. Hooray!
1662 | |
2978 | 1663 |
2961 | 1664 0.52 (02/17/2002): |
2965 | 1665 Rob: Well, after a long delay we're finally ready for another release. |
1666 I finally got settled into my new apartment, the new job is going
1667 well, and I finally have internet connectivity again. You can expect
1668 us to be back on our usually bi-monthly schedule. Enjoy these fixen,
1669 as they resolve a few connectivity issues. :-)
1670 | |
1671 Sean: It looks like things are back on track now. Eric left which is
1672 sad. He's done so much for Gaim, and I know we're all thankful.
1673 Thanks Eric! I'll be stepping in and do more development, but I can
1674 never replace Eric. This release fixes a long-standing problem in
1675 MSN. If you've gotten errors when trying to connect to MSN, you want
1676 this release. If you've suddenly found yourself unable to connect to
1677 Yahoo!, you want this release too. The "neat goodies" will be in the
1678 next release ;) | |
1679 | |
2967 | 1680 Rob: Operation Evil does not exist! ;-) |
2961 | 1681 |
2935 | 1682 |
2933 | 1683 0.51 (01/24/2002): |
2934 | 1684 Rob: Well, here we go. I FINALLY got around to making a release |
1685 after over a month, Sorry for the delay, all. Things got really
1686 hectic around the gaim house hold. This release isn't as complete
1687 as I had hoped, but I promised to get something out. There's some
1688 neat goodies in mind for the next release, right Sean? :-)

1827 the previous release but hey, what can ya say, there were a couple
1828 of good fixes in this one. Jabber & IRC can set / view the topics
1829 of chat rooms now, napster doesnt crash on bad login names and
1830 passwords, and the man page got a big update.
1831 | |
1832 Well, that's about all, folks. Next release, I hope to try to get
1833 group MSN chat support added as well as DCC support in the IRC
1834 plugin. | |

1199 | 2036 Rob: Hey guys! Guess what!? Yup, you're correct! It's the pre1 |
2037 release of 0.11.0. We have all sorts of goodies in this release!
2038 Check out the ChangeLog file. As always if you find any bugs,
2039 please report them on www.sourceforge.net/projects/gaim/
1195 | 2040 |
2041 You may find several small bugs as this is still a prerelease.
1192 | 2042 |
1199 | 2043 You may want to note that my IRC plugin does not have full |
2044 functionality as of yet. All of the important / commands will be
2045 added before the final release. Also, if someone could send me
2046 some good buddylist pixmaps for the irc plugin then I'd much
2047 appreciate it. Thanks to everyone who made this new release possible!

1194 | 2052 |
1192 | 2053 |
1195 | 2054 Eric: So what was Yay! For Gaim!? Yay was the codename for the |
2055 Yahoo plugin. The whole point of all of these changes was I wanted to
2056 make a proof-of-concept plugin that would let Gaim sign into Yahoo. It
2057 turned out to be pretty much impossible with the old code. So,
2058 Rob and I hacked gaim so we could do just that. There's now a whole new
2059 class of plugins, Protocol Plugins, that let users dynamically add new
2060 protocols to Gaim. Just load the plugin, and create a new account that
2061 uses that protocol, and you're set! Yay! (Oscar and TOC are both still
2062 static. Gaim is, after all, primarily an AIM client.)

170 | 2231 0.9.15: |
219 | 2232 Hey boy's and girls. There's not much to say here this time. |
2233 We're loving Southern California, the new job's going great. We just
2234 got our company website up and the product development is going pretty
2235 smooth. Life's pretty sweet now.
2236 | |
2237 We've hacked up all kinds of goodies for you in 0.9.15. There's
2238 some file transfer (receive) support for those of you who have been
2239 wanting it for a while. There's some other misc. goodies tossed in as
2240 well. Enjoy!! Oh yeah, we need a new website. Come up with a sweet
2241 design and get in touch with me. The current site is at:

104 | 2248 Well, there's a few random hacks and fixes in here, along with |
2249 a little suprise. You guessed it, kiddos, support for plugins! Happy
2250 hacking! | |
76 | 2251 |
56 | 2252 0.9.13: |
69 | 2253 Not much to say for this release. Bug fixes, That's all. Look |
2254 for the goodies I promised in 0.9.13 to appear in 0.9.14 which should be
2255 released very soon now.
56 | 2256 |
71 | 2257 By the way, our CVS is now hosted over at source forge. Go check |
2258 it out at http://www.sourceforge.net. Please check there before submitting
2259 any bug reports (You can read our CVS comments to see if we have fixed any

7 | 2262 0.9.12: |
25 | 2263 Well guys, looks like we got some nifty things in this version. |
2264 TrueType Fonts are supported for those XFSTT buffs out there (or whatever
2265 else you use). A crap load of those plaguing memory leaks have FINALLY been
2266 fixed. My brother, Jeramey, and a new friend Peter Teichan helped stomp
2267 those babies out. A rad guy by the name of Eric Warmenhoven has been
2268 really sweet lately and has all but rewritten the Gnome Applet support :).
2269 He submitted patch after patch. I finally got annoyed with him (just kidding bud)
2270 and gave him CVS access. Look for Gnome Applet support in Gaim to start improving.
2271 That's about all for now. I wanted to get this release out there. File Receive
2272 support will be in 0.9.13 which is due out soon.
7 | 2273 |
0 | 2274 0.9.11: |
2275 Jeramey got a new Comfy Chair! Its very very comfy! Whee!

2285 Well guys, it looks like we all stopped working on gaim, moved to California,
2286 and took up a new job. Don't worry though, those beach bums out here havent
2287 worn off on us yet. I've decided to pick up the Gaim torch myself and continue

2292 Umm. Dont ask. Silly memory leak. For those of you who
2293 wondered, you were losing about 256 bytes every 25 seconds for each

2299 problems with Gaim working properly, please check out the FAQ file. It |
0 | 2300 contains a nice fix submitted by one of our users. I hope this works for |

2302 Jim appears to have intoxicated himself. This is, as always, a
2303 Good Thing (tm). His late-night adventure with the liquid-bread food group
2304 lead to the birth of a nice little feature called `The Lag-O-Meter'. Dont
2305 ask, just try it out :). It is pretty pointless if you have a super-fast
2306 connection but if you are a modem user, like many of us are, then try it out.
2307 There's also some idle preferences and some other little random
2308 bug fixes. Check'em out yo :)

2310 0.9.8: | |
2311 Get Along Lil' Doggies. Heh. Looks like we have yet another new
2312 version of gaim for you guys to play with. Be gentle now, it has a few
2313 new fetures. The HTML widget is now more robust and we have *da da da*
2314 HTTP proxy support.
2315 Oh By The Way, Do not pay too much attention to what we are doing
2316 with this release. We are all a little bit happy tonight. You must love
2317 life. This is a special release of gaim. We will be releasing some wonderful
2318 photographs soon .. or perhaps if we get the bloody webcam working then we
2319 will take a couple of quick snapshots.

2320 Looks like the Gaim developers convention (cool name huh) that we |
0 | 2321 had this weekend in Auburn, AL went wonderfully :). yum yum yum. Hahahah. Oh |
2322 by the way. Beware of insecure rednecks in the deli. Bad things.
2323 In (non)related news, Jeramey could not successfully slaughter the
2324 one pound hamburger that he ordered. (I think he could have done it but he
2325 wasn't feeling very well at the time).
2326 Oh Yes, New Logo Too :) You likes? Thanks, Naru!
2327 Just a little side-note: it looks like we didnt make the release that
2328 we had expected during the Gaim Convention. Maybe we partied too much? I am
2329 not sure. I remember watching the sun rise before I went to bed, though.
2330 Oh well. Here's your release! Enjoy!
2331 By The Way, we have uploaded our party pictures to a website.

2336 Well, boys and girls, it's that time again! Yup, time for the good
2337 release fairy to come bless us with her infinite wisdom and divine presence.
2338 Umm, yeah, something like that. Anyways, this release has several little
2339 "bad" network fixes (as Jim likes to say) and a couple touch-ups to a few
2340 other features. It also features preliminary oscar support. Thanks to Jim
2341 and Adam ("the libfaim guy") hehe :) We have also corrected a problem with
2342 gaim not wainting to correctly save your password if you have an underscore
2343 in it. Thanks to w1za7d for pointing out the underscore problem. ' and \
2344 have also been fixed in passwords. :o)
2345 | |
2346 0.9.6: | |
2347 Sorry about the little segfaulting bugs in the past release. Rob
2348 is stupid. :). Anyways, they have been patched up and a couple new features
2349 have been added. I hope you guys enjoy.
2350 | |
2351 0.9.5: | |
2352 Well we added a myriad of new features to this release. (A lot of
2353 small buggie fixes too.) If you need a detailed list just check out the
2354 ChangeLog. We now have a new webpage design and have added a FAQ to the
2355 distribution. Before coming to us with any problems please take a quick
2356 look through the FAQ to make sure we havent already covered your question.
2357 Also, thanks to our beloved Web Monkey, FlynOrange, we have all
2358 learned the true power of foam weapons, slinkies, and whoopie cushions. Hmm
2359 gotta love those pranks, eh?

2361 0.8.0: | |
2362 Well, just starting the NEWS file. I'll try to remember what's new
2363 from the last version. Hmmm. BIG code reorg. Import/export, buddy pounce
2364 among the major new features. Autoconf script too, which is a big win.
2365 Apologies to those who submitted patches which haven't made it in.. I
2366 promise, the next version! This code reorg took up a lot of my time, and I
2367 want to get it out there.
2368 |
