Fix #1865 by not stripping leading and trailing spaces. I'm not sure why it was ever done - hopefully this doesn't break anything.

You can also generate this documentation locally by installing
doxygen and graphviz dot, then running "make docs" in the
source tree.  The documentation will be in the docs/html directory.
