Update the compatibility layer to g_memdup() stuff, so we don't end up with double-frees. This is completely untested, but I doubt anyone will use it.

You can also generate this documentation locally by installing
doxygen and graphviz dot, then running "make docs" in the
source tree.  The documentation will be in the docs/html directory.
